Every day like no other. Dominic Wilcox.
Dominic Wilcox was born in Sunderland, UK. While studying at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1998,
Dominic Wilcox created a collection of objects based on everyday items such as a bed, swing, and
bird cage. After graduating, he moved to Japan for one year before returning to the UK to study at
the Royal College of Art. Wilcox’s work has been published in numerous magazines – like in
Esquire's 75th anniversary October edition.
The UK's leading design and architecture magazine 'Icon' printed on a monthly basis his ideas and
inventions, called 'The Lost Sketchbooks'.
Dominic Wilcox is working on his own projects as well as major art commisions for e.g. Nike,
Vipp or Exquire. He is constantly developing new work, experiments, and ideas. His Xylophone Bin
is shown alongside other artists, designers, and celebrities – including Bono, Michael Stipe,
and Helena Christensen.
Dominic Wilcox is an ideas man, an artist who works every day. With everyday objects, environments,
buildings, human interaction.
I had an idea of using one single material in an interesting way to create something new. One of the things I liked about the auf blank box bag was the handle strap. I liked its feel, quality, and the slight shine to its appearance. I decided to focus on the idea of using the strap in a large quantity to wrap a bag. I liked the concept of taking a simple box and wrapping it many times with the strap material so that the box is turned into a bag with a handle.
The challenge was to keep the auf blank bag untouched but incorporate the wrap concept. After many prototypes we settled on one design. I chose a gray color for the box to compliment the 'oyster' strap color and used a vivid green for the interior for a fun, lively surprise.
